2010 Luncheon Speaker: “Homeless to Harvard” Student Liz Murray Print E-mail

Liz Murray, featured in the Lifetime movie "Homeless to Harvard," will be the guest speaker for the Women Helping Women Fund's annual luncheon, May 10, 2010, at the Spokane Convention Center.

Liz Murray's life is a triumph over adversity and a stunning example of the importance of dreaming big. Murray's life as the child of cocaine-addicted parents in the Bronx was bitterly grim. There was never food in the house, everything was filthy, drugs were everywhere and the welfare checks were spent before they arrived.

By age 15, Murray's mom had died and she was homeless - living on the streets, riding the subway all night, and eating from dumpsters. Amidst this pain, Murray always imagined her life could be much better than it was. "I started to grasp the value of the lessons learned while living on the streets. I knew, after overcoming those daily obstacles that next to nothing could hold me down."

Meet Liz, see a clip of her speech at DePauw University's Ubben Lecture Series, and view an excerpt of the Lifetime movie based on her life.

Mission Moment: Homelessness Print E-mail

According to the National Coalition for the Homeless, two trends are largely responsible for the rise in homelessness over the past 20-25 years: a growing shortage of affordable rental housing and a simultaneous increase in poverty. Spokane is no different. Women Helping Women Fund is committed to being informed about the needs of women and children in our community and to serve as catalysts to affect change. Recently, two-term board member Marlene Feist presented information to our Board of Directors on homelessness in Spokane.  Please take a look .

Our 2009 Pioneer Circle reception was a very special gathering of nearly 90 women collectively contributing $25,000 in support of WHWF's mission and work.  Thank you to Judy Sugg, Ph.D for sharing her lovely historic home for the event.  We are also grateful to Vintage Hill Cellars, Luna, Fery's Catering and New Leaf Bakery Cafe for their generosity.  Many thanks to Diane Maehl for her in-kind photography services.
