Vivian Winston Scholarship Print E-mail

WHWF is pleased to offer the Vivian Winston Scholarship to students of Community Colleges of Spokane and Eastern Washington University. The scholarship is available to women who are residents of the Greater Spokane area and its purpose is to remove barriers to education by providing financial assistance for daycare and other expenses. This year’s three recipients are all single mothers who are overcoming personal and financial challenges with courage and determination. Each of their personal journeys reinforces their commitment to securing a better future for their children through academic success in higher education. Please join us in congratulating these inspiring young women:

Angela Burks is the mother of three children and a full time student at Eastern Washington University majoring in both marketing and human resources with a minor in African-American Studies. Overcoming a family tragedy that resulted in her mother’s death and her own experience with domestic violence, Angela came to Eastern Washington with the goal of completing college while setting an example for her children. “I want to be a light to my children. If I fail, my children fail,” Angela said.

Alexis McDuffie is also a student at Eastern Washington University seeking a degree in dental hygiene. The mother of 4 small children, Alexis has shown incredible determination to be successful despite personal challenges that would have stopped others in their tracks. Alexis’ smile, which she describes as one her best tools to help give her strength, has a positive “can do” attitude.  Describing her goals, Alexis said, “I don’t just think I can do this, I know I can.”

Maira Sanchez is one of six children raised by a single mother who worked double shifts to support the family. In addition to her studies at Eastern Washington University, where she is majoring in psychology and Spanish and pursuing a minor in Women’s Studies, Maira is also balancing parenting to her young daughter while traveling every weekend to central Washington to work in a community health clinic. “My goal is to be a good mother, a good sister and an example for the community,” Maira said.
